Happy Icey Monday!
Wondering why I am not at school teaching my kiddos? Well, today, due to inclement weather, school was canceled. This was no shock to me because driving to the gym this morning at 5:20am was a very dangerous decision. Fish-tailing like nobody business and having to stop 100 yd before the stop sign to quit skidding was a red flag. So, needless to say, when I got the "No School" text I was not surprised. Therefore, I have decided to use this wonderful day as a lesson planning day! (Since I did none of that this past weekend...) As for the plans for tomorrow, who knows of what's to come...especially since there is a chance for some accumulation of snow.
This morning I have done lots of review and analysis on my Science lessons and assessment from last week. I definitely found some areas of weakness within the preparation for the assessment. They say for the retention of memory, a person has to hear/see the text/content 7 times. My students did not retain the information, probably because of this stated fact.... For the future I will plan to go over information at least 7 times and see if that makes a difference during assessment. It was hard to take in that only 65% met my expectations of the assessment but this has allowed me to reevaluate and better prepare for next time! There is always room for improvement and this is a learning experience.On a better note, my students did express to me that they did enjoy the assessment because of the usage of technology and being able to type their answers instead of write. (Their typing abilities were revealed to me as well....)

TGIF. Happy Friday everyone! First full week of school. Dunzo! All in all, a great week, lots of effort and energy and I am ready for a fun weekend. Today was full of tests, assessments, and normal Friday happenings. The day ended on a good note as I handed candies out to the students on their way home. I am anxious to see how they did on their Science assessments over the past 3 days of my science lessons. They were really disappointed when I announced that we were testing over Sound today because they assumed that there was going to be no more science for awhile. However, they assumed wrong. Next week I will be teaching/finishing a unit on the muscles and bones in our bodies. I am really excited for this because I have A LOT of knowledge behind these concepts. I am thinking I will lead them in group fitness exercise! That would be interactive, engaging, and fun! And, they would get to see another teaching side to me. I am excited for next week needless to say because of that! Have a fantastic weekend, GO CATS!

Wow! What a great day today was! Work out- 5:30am! School- 8:00am! And teaching an amazing science lesson- 12:30pm-BAM! I could not have done it without the wonderful participation of my students but really, it was a great lesson! It was full of hands-on experimenting, rotating stations, and gave the students the "freedom to explore" on their own. I was really impressed and relieved! ...and.. best part of it, I had a supervisor watching the whole time. I just hope all my other lessons can live up to this ability every time. Probably won't happen just thinking realistically, but hopefully majority of them will. Tomorrow is Friday, TGIF! ! ! ! I am very excited and happy that I have made it threw my first FULL week of 4th grade! I think I can definitely do this! All I need is organization skills, a positive attitude, and a smile on my face! Wa-lah! Piece of cake! -----Although it will be the most energy I have ever put into a piece of cake! Ha! Anyways, I hope everyone else has a great Friday---enjoy the sunshine and nice weather---- and has a great weekend as well! Remember to celebrate Kansas's 150th birthday on Saturday by eating some corn, churning some butter, or taking a walk outside and absorbing the beauty of our State! ...I'll be driving through the Flint Hills.... Woo!

Happy Hump Day Everyone. Wow, a 5-day week is definitely feeling a little longer than the past 3 weeks of 3-4 day weeks, I have to admit. I hit a wall this afternoon and I need to get my sleep and bounce back! I taught science today (The Physics of Sound) and lets just say, a little preparation would have helped me out. Hopefully tomorrows science will go better. Classroom and behavior management is strictly a subject of it's own. Man, I have a lot to learn. Other than the semi-chaotic science lesson... today was a good one. Off to bed! And the gym in the morning!

Hello!
Back to school, back to school. Today was a bit overwhelming because of all the catch up we have to play. The flu is being passed around like candy so perfect attendance is seldom. Regardless, we push through and get things completed and introduce new concepts. After giving the spelling pretest today, I know this is going to be a tough full week for the students. It's a hard list of words, and on top of spelling words, there all the other subjects! BUT! Tomorrow is the spelling bee, and then Wed. there is an assembly, and I am teaching SCIENCE! I know the students will appreciate a nice break from Social Studies and enjoy investigation about the Physics of SOUND! I am still in my planning process (which I should have been done last night) but I left my flash drive at school, bummer. So, I will be working hard this morning to get caught up and things turned in to the right person. I should be having an informal observation by a professor so, as long as things are organized, I'll be good!
Thanks to my roommate, a really neat website has been discovered! It is called Evernote. It can be downloaded to Mac, Windows, iPads, mobile phones with internet, etc..Basically, it is an online organizer that you can store pictures, texts, clips, documents, files, etc.. on and be able to access it from any computer. (Ha, as of last nights forgetfulness, this would have been helpful to have my document saved....) If you are a type of person who sees things online, pictures, etc.. and like to print them out or save them, this would be a great tool for you to use to organize those keepsakes. Google it, read about it, watch a few user friendly Youtubes about it and see if it is a fit for you! Keep me posted if you decide to use it!

TGIF. Wow, it's hard to get caught up when you fall behind. It has been a crazy week since we did not have school Monday nor Thursday and now, tomorrow is Saturday! I completed my lessons in Reading and I am moving right in my Science lesson planning. Reading was a success...well, for the number of days we had... it worked. Next week is another busy week, playing catch up and staying on track. We have assemblies, speakers, Kansas's 150th birthday! You name it.
What I have learned so far from this experience is that teachers have to be FLEXIBLE. Nothing ever goes as planned. It's a fact. However, being flexible allows room for exceptional teaching and making time count when it needs to the most.
I also learned that it is very necessary to keep a roll of Airborne in your desk at ALL TIMES. Needless to say I had to put one in my water bottle today as the flu is spreading like crazy.

Hello! I hope you are warm and cozy. Today was another great day, and another day that exhibited the importance of flexibility as a teacher. As 9:00am rolled around, the flakes started falling. Falling like crazy, I mean. And before I knew it there was an inch of snow on the ground. Then two. Then three. Then school was determined an Early Release Day at 2:00pm. Phones started ringing, the intercom starting buzzing into the classrooms and the students were excited but anxious as they made numerous phones call each. Number one reminder to any parent out there, always teach your child your phone number. A great way to help your child retain the number in memory is to make the number into a song or tune. So, by the time the students were all gone from the school, there was 3.5 inches accumulated. And...it's still falling now as I look out my window from my room. It is nasty and slick out so be very careful if traveling! Anyways, I have the rest of the week all planned out and will make adjustments once I get back at my desk. I wonder what this will bring for tomorrow. I am content either way. :)

Good Evening Blog-followers,
Today was an awesome day to say the least. I woke up at 5:15am and went to the gym with a few friends to workout. We are on a mission to complete the "Insanity" workout together. Tomorrow morning will come quick I am sure of it. After checking off my work-out for the day I showered up and headed to school. I taught for 4 hours today! It was really great and I feel the students really enjoyed my teaching! It was entertaining, new, and animated. It has to be these days to keep those kiddos engaged. I was exhausted by 2pm but still managed to complete a primary classroom observation and then call it a day. The rest of the week will be interesting as a big snow storm is on its way--they are predicting 6-8inches... possible snow day Thursday...we shall see. I am thrilled either way! Oh, and I forgot to mention...I got my "Green-light-GO!" for graduation from my advisor! I am all set!

IT'S FRIDAY!!!!!!!! I am just a little bit excited about this fact, and the fact that I have a 3-day weekend... thanks to Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and his fight with love to bring about fairness and peace in this nation. Today was great, but the first day I can honestly admit: I am exhausted. But none the less, I made it to the gym right after school and am now winding down. The day went smoothly and I was able to teach the students about M.L.K. and his importance, and the purpose of MLK Day: to celebrate his birthday (1/15) and his heroism. I made a fun game of Jeopardy and spoiled them with cookies! The cookies were fresh from this morning at 7am! I am a mega-multi-tasker if you did not know. And, I think I might have made the best batch of "Chocscotchy" Cookies. I will not share my recipes in case one fine day I open a bakery of my own, and then you may come have one! But I did make 4 dozen in about 55 minutes believe it or not. They were delicious! Anyways, the day continued, I gave them their spelling tests, graded lots of papers, and got fresh air at outdoor recess. All in all a great way to end the week. I am looking forward to next week, bring on Tuesday!

Hello, I have finally sat down for the day/evening. It has been a long one but I am still going. Today went really well and I was able to lead the class in lots of subjects. Reading was by far the most crucial and practicing some social studies concepts was next in line. The students had their annual Geography Bee today and it was really fun and exciting to watch (and secretly guess the answers in my head). Man, they were tough questions. But I feel I was pretty familiar with a lot of the landmarks nationally and worldwide. It was impressive at how much I knew just through reading News headings, watching movies, and traveling and being observant while doing so. I wish they would hold a teacher Geography Bee. I bet I would be a strong candidate.
I am thrilled that tomorrow is Friday and the beginning of a 3 day weekend! It will be nice to sleep in and not be on an 8-5 schedule. I do plan to begin my 7-10 day Unit lesson plans so I won't be stressed out during the week. I am proud to say that I feel K-State's College of Education has prepared me well for Student Teaching... way to go!
Sounds like my mom, Kimberly, will be making a visit on Sunday here in Manhattan. A little shopping, movie, and dinner action I am assuming is what will happen. That all sounds like a good plan to me!

Mrs. is the abbreviation for Missis/Missus (interchangeable spelling...)
^Never thought about what Mrs. stood for. Now, I know.^

I think many educators loose track on what the purpose is of Special Education and this statement, I believe, sums it up.

Good evening all,
Today was once again a success and great day to be at the school. Although for the heating mishap where the heater failed and was blowing in cold, crisp air, it was a great day! That small mishap put our class out in the hallway for about an hour. Nothing like eating lunch in the hallways of my school on the floor. Yikes! But, luckily it was fixed late afternoon! I am excited as today I could definitely tell I am beginning to make an impact on the students. It makes me feel happy, comfortable, and proud. Not only is this learning experience teaching me about teaching studenst but it is also teaching me about life, people,and what really matters. Being a teacher, we take on many roles... A lot more than I ever imagined. I am always skeptical as to why more people aren't teachers.... I understand that salary is a bit of a concern, and A LOT of work and energy are put into the job but happiness is a much greater reward (in my opinion) and you really become a more greatful person. Never forget to thank and reward those teachers that surround you and/or your children! They deserve it! Goodnight!

Hi All,
Today was a sweet and sour day because of all the other districts that got another snow day and we did not. But honestly, it was good to get back in the swing of things and catch up from Monday and not fall behind another day. The days are going by so fast! I am getting to know my students and teacher very well, it's going to be March before no time and then it's down hill from there!
Interesting fact, as I was talking with my students today, I found out that they had a K-State celebrity as there Teacher Aid the semester before...great, I thought. Ha. Well, they went on to tell me that it was "J.O." Jordan Enrique-Hernadez from the basketball team. Big shoes to fill....right, ? Ha! But anyways they think he is just the best and it's neat to think he has impacted my students. I would like to get in touch with him and have him make a surprise visit to the classroom. So, if anyone sees him on campus please relay the message from me!
Alright, another day is ahead so I must go!

Yay, it's Friday!!
School- check! Workout-check-check! Relaxing for the rest of the evening....YES! However, I did decided with my teacher tonight that we would meet tomorrow at the school and get some stuff done to stay ahead of the game. But, honestly, that's a great plan for me because I was going to work on school things anyways and why not do it with my teacher! It will be relaxing, no students, and quiet,....sounds good to me. Especially since the weather people, my boss elsewhere, and the schools are talking up a big snow storm for Monday... expected 4-8 in. I guess..! We'll see if that happens... if so, it will be an official SNOW DAY!!!! Ha, the small perks of being a teacher! :) I would love a day to re-coop and relax, scrapbook, plan, maybe hit up the mall... eh, slim chances but I'll most definitely inform the blog if it happens. Anyways, great day again, although I still have my cold. Hopefully it will disappear this weekend... extra rest and lots of liquids. Nothing too extreme happened, learned more classroom procedures, and worked with small groups of students. Can't complain! I observed the students in P.E. and music and that was really neat to see different parts of their personalities come out. I played with them during P.E. and they really enjoyed that. They all wanted me to be on their team! Ha! And in class we played some fun games that involved practicing spelling "Sparkle" and another game that influenced critical and logical thinking skills "Cops and Robbers". It was lots of fun!

Another great day has past. I am still not feeling 100% but it will do...the weekend of "rest" is near! In fact, less than 24 hours away. Anyways, today was great because I was able to get my desk and territory organized, and I taught about latitude and longitude. I learned lots of new things and by 4:00pm I was exhausted. However, this morning I packed my gym bag for this purpose...head straight to the gym after school, so I concluded my work day at the rec. (I thought you had to have a lot of energy for college...but today I realized finding the energy for college is a 4 year prep for the real world where you need to have lots of energy for a full day's work). I am excited for tomorrow because it's Friday, and Fridays just seemed to be different than all the other days, so bring on Friday!
I currently have pasta on the stove top boiling and chicken in the oven baking and waiting on a friend to come over for dinner. Better go.

Good Afternoon,
I survived and am alive. 100% free of illness... not so much. The first step in the door to an elementary school never fails to alert the germs that I am in the building and defenseless to their battles. Germs..., you win. Anyways, minus the fact that I was/and still am not feeling 100% up to par, the day was great. I really enjoyed my teacher and I have a feeling I will learn a lot from her as she will learn a lot from me. I was pretty much her shadow today and followed her around everywhere, got to know names of people in the building, and we went downstairs to claim a desk for me! Although it is no Steelcase...it will do. It's more like a Charlie Brown but, hey, it comes with the experience and will help get the job done. I'll get a Steelcase desk and Leap chair soon enough when I have an official job...right, Dad? So, tomorrow will be a day to set up my desk and be more organized. Before I headed out for the day, I read to the students out loud for a solid 30 minutes and I felt it was the beginning of rapport with them. As I was packing up and putting on my jacket, a student came up to me and said "When will you be back?" and that made my day. More good days and things to come.

I survived and am alive. 100% free of illness... not so much. The first step in the door to an elementary school never fails to alert the germs that I am in the building and defenseless to their battles. Germs..., you win. Anyways, minus the fact that I was/and still am not feeling 100% up to par, the day was great. I really enjoyed my teacher and I have a feeling I will learn a lot from her as she will learn a lot from me. I was pretty much her shadow today and followed her around everywhere, got to know names of people in the building, and we went downstairs to claim a desk for me! Although it is no Steelcase...it will do. It's more like a Charlie Brown but, hey, it comes with the experience and will help get the job done. I'll get a Steelcase desk and Leap chair soon enough when I have an official job...right, Dad? So, tomorrow will be a day to set up my desk and be more organized. Before I headed out for the day, I read to the students out loud for a solid 30 minutes and I felt it was the beginning of rapport with them. As I was packing up and putting on my jacket, a student came up to me and said "When will you be back?" and that made my day. More good days and things to come.

The Night Before
Good Evening,
I would like to introduce myself. My name is Molly Emert, I am an Elementary Education major at Kansas State University and I am concentrating in Special Education. I am very passionate about becoming an effective teacher. I believe I have what it takes to become an exceptional teacher. Please follow me along my journey this semester by reading my blog. I cannot promise that they will all be worthwhile to read or be grammatically correct all the time but, I will do my best. I begin tomorrow morning at 8:00am. Sounds like it will be a short day but it is always great to ease into new situations instead of being completely overwhelmed.
My goal for this (blogger) is to blog everyday when I get home from school.
I think it will be a great way for me to communicate with others (friends, family, and other educators) on my experience.
